More about Reiki
Reiki is a gentle yet powerful form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word "Reiki" comes from the Japanese words rei (universal) and ki (life energy), and it refers to the universal life force energy that flows through all living beings. When this energy is balanced and flowing freely, we experience good health and a sense of inner peace. Reiki aims to support and restore this natural energy flow.
The Principles of Reiki
At the heart of Reiki is the belief that the body has an innate ability to heal itself. Reiki practitioners act as channels for this universal energy, using their hands to guide healing energy to areas where it is most needed. The practice is non-invasive and can be used alongside conventional medical treatments or other therapies.
What Happens in a Reiki Session?
During a Reiki session, the client typically lies down fully clothed in a quiet, comfortable space. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body in a series of positions, staying in each position for several minutes. There is no manipulation of muscles or tissue.
People often report sensations such as warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation during a session. Some even fall asleep. While the experience varies from person to person, Reiki is generally calming and restorative, and many leave a session feeling more grounded and centered.
Benefits of Reiki
Though Reiki does not aim to diagnose or cure specific conditions, it is widely used to support overall wellness and is known for the following benefits:
Deep relaxation and stress reduction
Improved emotional clarity and balance
Enhanced healing after illness or surgery
Relief from pain or discomfort
Support during grief or emotional upheaval
Improved sleep quality
Reiki is suitable for all ages and can be particularly beneficial for people experiencing anxiety, fatigue, or emotional distress.
Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, also emphasized a spiritual and ethical component to the practice. He taught five guiding principles that are still followed by many practitioners today:
- Just for today, I will not be angry.
- Just for today, I will not worry.
- Just for today, I will be grateful.
- Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
- Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
These affirmations reflect the holistic nature of Reiki, which addresses not only physical well-being but emotional, mental, and spiritual health as well.
